Thoughts on this excerpt?

It's not bad for a first draft. Drop the first sentence and begin with the second, other than that you should continue on and finish the story before being concerned about any particular part. Stopping after each page, chapter, whatever, is the best way to never finish. Once the story is finished you can return to the beginning and easily fix most of your errors because you won't be as close to it as you are now.
